How to count the calls your business is missing

Most owners guess. Here are four places to find the real number in about 15 minutes, and what to do with it.

Ask most owners how many calls they miss and you get a shrug. That makes sense. A missed call leaves almost no trace, and the ones that matter most, new customers calling for the first time, rarely leave a voicemail. Here is how to get a real number instead of a guess.

1. Your phone’s recent calls list

Open the recent calls on the phone your business number rings to and filter for missed calls. Count a normal week. If your business line forwards to several phones, check each one, because a call only counts as missed if nobody picked up.

2. Your carrier’s call log

Your carrier’s online account or app usually keeps a call history for your number, including calls that went to voicemail or rang out. This catches calls that never showed on a phone because it was off or out of signal.

3. Voicemails versus missed calls

Compare the number of voicemails to the number of missed calls for the same week. The gap is the callers who hung up without leaving a message. Those are often the ones who called the next business on the list.

4. Your Google Business Profile

If you have a Google Business Profile, its performance section shows how many people tapped to call you from Search and Maps. It won’t tell you which calls you missed, but it shows how many new customers are trying to reach you.

Turn the count into a dollar figure

Take your weekly missed calls, estimate how many of those callers would have booked, and multiply by what an average job is worth. Our calculator does the math, using your numbers, not ours.
